How to Board the Shinkansen (3), Train Travel in Japan |
![]() |
At the Platform When you are at the platform, look for the boarding lane where your car will stop. Then form a line. Do not cut into line, and it will cause you fighting or shouting match. Even if you cannot understand Japanese at all, please do not speak with a loud voice during train information announcements. The "Nozomi" on Tokaido Shinkansen is 400 meter long. If you make a mistake "Car 1 or Car 16", you should walk about 400 meters. So be careful of boarding lane and car you will take. |
EX: the "Nozomi 1", (<=Hakata, Tokyo=>), (cf: NR: Non-reserved Car, R: Reserved Car, G: Green Car) All seats are non-smoking, and smoking rooms are available.(cf: red square: Smoking room in Non-smoking car)

Ekiben "Ekiben" means "station box lunch". Other than Ekiben, box lunch is selling all over Japan. Box lunch is also Japanese culture. Japanese people call box lunch "Bento" or "O-bento." Before new Ekiben sells, a station master check taste and appropriate price severely. Diner in Shinkansen was abolished. In the past, diners were coupled on Shinkansen when trains run at 210 km/h. At present, some trains run at 300 km/h, passengers do not have enough time to eat in diner. What if your train arrive while you are eating?!! Diners sales have begun to down, and diners were abolished. If you buy an Ekiben, you can eat in cabin. O-bento is also sell in the train. |
![]() Depending on stations, Ekiben menu is different. It must be fun to enjoy eating during trip. |

Boarding Lane Passengers should form a line in the boarding lane. Passengers who have "Super Express Ticket (NON-reserved)" should proceed to the "Non-reserved Car", and they are not allowed to stand or sit down in the Reserved Car. Depending on platforms, "Safety Fence & Doors" are eqipped in case high speed train brow passengers away. As long as safety doors are not open, do not enter or go over it. |

Making Sure of Car Number Depending on Shinkansen trains, all seats are reserved and passengers without seat reservation cannot board (Standing tickets of "Hayate" and "Komachi" are sold when seats are full). Check your car carefully. The trains of this photo are the "Hayate" (Car 1 - 10) and the "Komachi" (Car 11 -16). If you have a reserved ticket of "Hayate" and board "Komachi" car at the Omiya station, you cannot move to correct car as long as train is running. Once this train leave Omiya at 7:58, it will arrive at Sendai the next stop at 9:13?!! |

They are passengers who try to board the "Non-reserved Car". I do not recommend you board trains without reservation very much. Sometimes passengers cannot sit because seats are full. Even if a train is crowded, passengers with "Non-reserved seat ticket" are not allowed to stand or sit in the reserved car. Passengers with "Standing ticket" should stand in the car that is written in ticket (not SEAT reservation, but CAR reservation). |
