| How to Board the Shinkansen (5), Train Travel in Japan |

Arriving at Your Destination Before a train is about to arrive, arrival station & transfer information is displayed on the electric bulletin board in cabin in both English and Japanese. But it is not equipped in very old car. Then their informations are about to be announced automatically, at first in Japanese, then in English. For example, "Ladies & gentlemen. We will soon make a brief stop at Karuizawa. Passengers changing to the Shinano Railways, please transfer at this station. We stop after Karuizawa will be Nagano terminal." |

| Now Arriving Make sure of all your belongings with you again. |
| Going Out of Shinkansen Platform Proceed to the exit, seeing "Exit" sign. Passengers going to present line, see transfer signs. If you miss this sign, you will lose your way.  |

Going through the gates (1) Gate for Shinkansen Only This is for passengers who go out of Shinkansen platform directly. Depending on stations, it is impossible. (2) Gate for Transfer & Gate for Present Line It is for passengers who cannot go through "Gate for Shinkansen Only". At first, proceed to the "Transfer Gate", then go through the "Gate for Present Line". (3) Passengers going to Present Line They are the people who will board local train, etc... Then change trains here for present line, and should go through the "Gate for Transfer" at changing station. (4) Stopover Depending on tickets, stopover with normal fare ticket is allowed. And go through station staff gate, and say station staff "Tochu-gesha (=stopover, in Japanese), show them your fare ticket". But charge tickets are collected. |
| Tickets Collected Passengers with automated tickets (Reverse side is black) Go through the "Automatic Ticket Checker", and insert tickets up to 4 tickets simultaneously. But do not insert other portions tickets. Only super express ticket is collected, and pick up your fare ticket. Then go through present line gate, there your fare ticket will be collected. If you go through the "Gate for Shinkansen Only", fare ticket & super express ticket are collected simultaneously. Passengers with Non-automated tickets (Reverse side is gray or white), using rail passes (such as Japan Rail Pass), or passengers with wheel chair should go through "Station Staff Gate". Then show your tickets and pass, and super express ticket will be collected at the transfer gate. Fare Adjustment is accepted at the window before going through the gate. If you make a train ride mistake, ask the conductor or station staff immeadiately. And it is not regard it as illegal train ride. Caution: Illegal train ride is strictly forbidden (fi. Other person used Japan Rail pass illegally). The people who try it will be fined 3 times as much as normal fare & charge, as well it regards as illegal rides every day (fine x every day from valid day). And this ticket will be collected.
