Boarding Shinkansen
How to Board the Shinkansen (4), Train Travel in Japan

train approaching Train Approaching
Train approaching information is announced automatically in Japanese. Please be quiet while announcement. It is important information for boarding passengers whether you understand Japanese or not. In Shinkansen of JR-East, at some stations, English train approaching information is announced automatically. For example, "Your attention, please! The Hayate 1 for Hachinohe, and the Komachi 1 for Akita, will soon arrive at track 20. For your safety, please stand behind the yellow line."

Boarding
Make sure of your car number. Especially mind the gap between train and platform, when you take Mini-Shinkansen, that is the "Komachi" on Akita shinkansen, and the "Tsubasa" on Yamagata Shinkansen. As these trains go to present lines, cars of them are smaller than standard Shinkansen cars.

Cabin
Toilets, telephone service, drinks vending machines are available. O-bento, ice cream, beer, hot cofee, souvenirs are sold in most of Shinkansen trains. As mentioned above, there is no diner. Please try Japanese culture "O-bento" in cabin. To eat foods sold at other shop is allowed. Refrain from speaking with a loud voice, especially near sleeping passengers, some informations by conductor are announced.
Standard Shinkansen is wide body ("3&2" seat row). On the other hand, Mini-Shinkansen is the same size as present line. Probably the size of present line is world standard size, almost the same as the "Eurostar". Seat row of Green car for Shinkansen is "2&2".

Make sure of your seat number.
Seat
When you board, make sure of your seat number. After train departed, your tickets will be inspected by conductor in cabin.
Seat pitch of ordinary car of Shinkansen is even wider than that of plane (economy class). Seat direction is changeable when you step on a pedal under the seat. So you can enjoy talking with 4 passengers (plane style => box style).
mobile phonePlease set your mobile phone to silent mode and refrain from talking on the phone in cabin. If you want to use it, talk at the edge entrance of car.
It is the way of limited express style car. When it comes to commuter train, it is a little different. In commuter trains, set your mobile phone to silent mode and refrain from talking on the phone. When you are near the priority seats, switch off your mobile phone .

Departure
Mostly trains depart on time, especially Shinkansen trains arrive on time. It is not only conductors' efforts, but also passengers' cooperation. They board and get off trains as soon as possible, and form lines in the boarding lane.
Before departing, departure bell rings, and departure information is announced in Japanese automatically at the platform. Depending on stations, departure melody is used instead of bell in JR-East. However on present line portion in Akita and Yamagata Shinkansen, departure bell or melody is not used (Suddenly doors are closed).

Missed a Shinkansen I reserved?!! What should I do?
If you missed a train you reserved, Reserved-car ticket and Green-car ticket are NOT valid. And these tickets can not be refundable. But you can board a later train in Non-reserved car (ordinary car) on a same day. However all seats on "Hayate" and "Komachi" are reserved, you can stand in these trains (It is a regulation only for the "Hayate" and "Komachi"). If a reserved seat is used on a later train, a full charge must be paid.
